Recently, I see most startups use the domain name .IO to represent their product/business. Any componenticular reasons or is it just that they couldn't acquire .COM domain name which is one of the oldest TLD?

.io is about $30 - three times the cost of .com.
I suspect  most buyers are tech websites that can't get the .com

If they had the option to take the .com, either instead of or in addition to .io, I bet all of them would.

Hi! Like others have said, it could be that the .com was already taken. However, .io is also popular enough with tech brands that tech-savvy users may quickly associate a new brand with the tech industry if they have a .io TLD. It may also be a branding initiative to quickly gain trust if the website/organization is new.

.io is not much known extension by buyers and most of them may not trust it. But if .com is taken and domain name is short and well then extension may not affect the popularity.

IO stands for input/output and ever since this logic has been used by many marketers to sell the .IO domain to tech companies, brands and businesses are buying into this. But understand that .COM is any day better in term of price.

If there are SMBs, startups, new businesses or even tech firms that want to go for .IO , there is no harm. Its just that they want to be seen as a different brand or maybe perceived as a more tech company than others.

.IO has long been a general extension, not just for tech brands.

If .COM is busy, then you can consider the following general extensions: .IO, .NET, .CO, .ORG and .XYZ

Recently there have been reports in the domain aftermarket reseller sector newsletters of businesses "upgrading" to the .io from a .com. It appears to have gained genuine traction.

It is not yet attaining the money value status of the .com on the aftermarket and the initial registration price does put some people off, but perhaps that is at the lower end of the market. 30 bucks a year is less than chickenfeed to a multi-million, let alone a multi-billion, dollar company. The tech startups are often attaining huge investment sums even in their first round of attracting funding.

For anybody thinking of registering a .io domain - think carefully, and make sure you read up on the political situation (google "Chagos").

.io could easily disappear one day.
